The World Press Photo exhibition will return to Rotterdam. The best news photos of the year will be exhibited in the World Trade Center Rotterdam from 19 January 2019.
From 19 January to 10 February 2019, the new World Press Photo exhibition will return to Rotterdam. The exhibition moves from the Laurenskerk to the World Trade Center Rotterdam. This central location is easily accessible by public transport along the special route from the Beurs metro station through the Koopgoot. The World Press Photo Exhibition 2018 shows the most talked about and impressive press photos from the previous year. Apart from the exhibition, there are also interesting presentations and events on the program. The online ticket sales start at the end of November.
In April, the international jury shortlisted 4,548 photos from 73,044 submissions from 125 countries. The winner was ‘Venezuela Crisis’ by the Venzuelan photographer, Reinaldo Schemidt. He photographed José Víctor Salazar Balza who caught fire while fighting the riot police during a protest against President Maduro in Caracas. The winning photo will of course be shown in Rotterdam next to the winners of the other categories such as sport, people, nature, the environment and current affairs.
Iconic images show injustices in the world
Since 1955, World Press Photo has chosen the most impressive news photos of the year. Some of them have become iconic – the naked little girl running away from a napalm bomb in Vietnam; a Buddhist monk setting himself on fire; a lonely demonstrator standing in front of tanks on Tiananmen Square. Thanks to the work of the award winning photographers, these dramatic events and injustices do not go unnoticed in the world and are etched on our collective memory.
